Travel Tips for Visitors Savjeti za posjetitelje

Everything our American friends and family need to know before arriving. Sve sto nasi prijatelji i obitelj trebaju znati prije dolaska.

Croatia uses the Euro (€) as of 2023. Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in Split, but carry some cash for smaller shops, markets, and tips. ATMs are everywhere in the city center. Your US bank may charge foreign transaction fees, so consider a no-fee travel card. Tipping isn't mandatory but 10-15% at restaurants is appreciated.
Croatia uses Type C and F plugs (European two-pin round). US plugs won't fit! Buy a universal adapter before your trip or grab one at the airport. Voltage is 230V (vs US 120V), but most phone chargers and laptops handle both automatically — check the label on your charger. Hrvatska koristi tip C i F uticnice (europski dvostruki okrugli). Americki uticaci nece odgovarati! Kupite univerzalni adapter prije puta.
Wi-Fi is widely available in hotels, restaurants, and cafes. For mobile data, you can either: (1) Buy a local SIM card at the airport (Hrvatski Telekom or A1 — about €10-15 for a week), (2) Use an eSIM like Airalo or Holafly, or (3) Check if your US carrier offers an international plan (T-Mobile often includes free data abroad). The country code for Croatia is +385.
Split's Old Town is entirely walkable. For getting to the restaurant in Dugopolje (15 min from Split), you can use Uber (yes, it works in Croatia!), Bolt (a popular local alternative), or rent a car. Taxis are also available but agree on a price first or insist on the meter. Driving is on the right side, same as the US. An international driving permit is recommended but not always required for short stays.
Croatian food is amazing! Must-try dishes: peka (meat/octopus slow-cooked under a bell), cevapi (grilled meat), buzara (shellfish stew), pasticada (braised beef), and fritule (mini donuts). Meals tend to be long and social — don't rush! Lunch is the biggest meal. Restaurants may not bring the check until you ask — just say "racun, molim" (check, please). Water at restaurants is typically bottled (not free refills like in the US). Hrvatska hrana je fantastična! Obavezno probajte: peku, cevape, buzaru, pasticadu i fritule.
Croatia is in the Central European Time Zone (CET/CEST). In July, that's UTC+2, which means it's 6 hours ahead of US Eastern Time and 9 hours ahead of US Pacific Time. Plan to arrive a day or two early to adjust! Summer days are long — it stays light until about 9pm. Hrvatska je u srednjoeuropskoj vremenskoj zoni. U srpnju je UTC+2, sto znaci 6 sati ispred americkog istocnog vremena.
July in Split is hot (85-95°F / 30-35°C). Pack light, breathable clothes, sunscreen, and a hat. For the baptism ceremony at church, dress respectfully — shoulders and knees should be covered. Smart casual is perfect for the restaurant celebration. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the cobblestone streets, and a swimsuit for the beaches!
Most people in Split speak English, especially younger people and those in tourism. But locals really appreciate when you try a few words!

Bok (bohk) — Hi / Bye
Hvala (HVAH-lah) — Thank you
Molim (MOH-leem) — Please / You're welcome
Da / Ne — Yes / No
Zivjeli! (ZHEE-vyeh-lee) — Cheers! (for toasting)
Racun, molim (RAH-choon) — Check, please
Govorite li engleski? — Do you speak English?
Dobar dan (DOH-bar dahn) — Good day
Oprosti (oh-PROH-stee) — Excuse me
Vecina ljudi u Splitu govori engleski, posebno mladi i oni u turizmu.
Croatia is very safe for tourists! Split is walkable and welcoming. A few tips: Tap water is safe to drink. Emergency number is 112. Pharmacies (ljekarna) are common for basic medicine. Bring a European health insurance card if you have one, or consider travel insurance. US citizens don't need a visa for stays under 90 days — just bring your passport (valid for at least 6 months). Sunscreen is a must — the Mediterranean sun is strong! Hrvatska je vrlo sigurna za turiste! Split je hodljiv i gostoprimljiv. Voda iz slavine je sigurna za pice. Hitni broj je 112.
